Brain Injuries & Tumors
A traumatic brain injury (TBI) or a concussion is a head injury that affects your brain function. It is typically caused by a blow to the head, such as one sustained while participating in a contact sport, when involved in an accident, or if your head and upper body are violently shaken.
Oftentimes, you can sustain a concussion without realizing it, since the symptoms may not be immediately noticeable. Once symptoms appear, they can include a headache, disorientation, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, slurred speech, a ringing in the ears, a delayed response to questions, and/or a lack of memory of the traumatic event.
Lingering effects of a TBI may include fatigue, faulty recall, a lack of concentration, sensitivity to light and noise, disturbed sleep patterns, altered taste and smell, or even a change in personality.
Brain tumors are masses or growths of abnormal cells in the brain. Whether benign or malignant, they have similar symptoms as TBIs, and may also include blurred vision, lack of balance, confusion, and seizures. However, in some cases, a brain tumor may not trigger any symptoms at all. Treatment for brain tumors may include surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy.
Both TBIs and brain tumors are serious medical conditions, which is why it is imperative that you see a doctor as soon as possible if you experience symptoms or immediately after a head injury. A concussion, for example, can lead to bleeding in or around your brain and, if not treated promptly, can result in complications, such as the risk of lasting or progressive impairment, limiting your function.
